HISTORY OF CARSON RURITAN CLUB
The Carson Ruritan Club began in 1949 with 32 charter members. During the Club's first few years of existence, it held meetings in the old Carson School cafeteria. The first years' President was Dave Meikle, and in a tradition that continued without repeat for each of the next 35 years, a different member held the office.
Prior to the present location, the Club considered building where the library is located today. The building was built in 1964 after several members signed a note to get the process started. Numerous amounts of materials and labor were generously donated during the construction. Timber, given by John W. Clements, was sawed and planed by Roy Lee Mattox for the Club. P. B. Halligan Company donated materials as well as trucks for transporting. Buck McCann chaired the Building Committee.
Over the years the Club has sponsored many money raising projects. Some of those included a booth at the Petersburg Fair, turkey shoots, auction sales (this is where Paul Cerny got his start), Bar-B-Qs and stews. The Club also built a ball field where softball games were played for many years. Currently, the Club participates in the Emporia Pork Festival, Rowanta Bar-B-Q, and sponsors monthly dances at the building. In recent years the Club has sponsored local little league teams, Vacation Bible School at several churches, and Hunters for Hungry. The Club built the Carson Library, donated to help build pavilions at county schools, as well as a playground at Carson Elementary, and provided scholarships to several local students.
