The origins of Gamma Goat begin in the year 2003, when the idea is sparked to form a "country metal band", through conversations between Felton and Norse. The first official practice occurs in the fall of 2004, comprised of sludgy, detuned bass guitar and banjo. The project finds real momentum with the addition of Peterson on drums shortly after the first practices.
Despite the original idea, the band's sound more accurately resembles a post-punk/industrial/folk hybrid, refining ever further with each passing year. The band's first wave of activity, from 2004-2008, could be described as gleefully obstinate. While having multiple albums worth of rehearsed songs, the band would often produce one-off experimental works for the live stage. Early shows were viewed more like performance art. A strong sense of humor present in much of the band's work at this time was obscured by harsh, confrontational compositions.
Late summer 2008 marks the end of the first wave of Gamma Goat.
The second wave of Gamma Goat is comprised of a small, sporadic series of improvisational performances, most of them in the woods, between 2011 and 2013.
Beginning once more in 2016, Gamma Goat has now entered its third wave. The sound can now be described as Graveyard Trash Funk, and aside from certain special performances, Gamma Goat currently operates as the duo of Norse and Felton.
